I recently read a quote from acclaimed clinical psychologist, Madeline Levine, in the NY Times. Her quote had to do with how to raise children who are helpful and self-aware of their impact upon others and constructive (even inventive) in their role as a member of their family. For us, as a couple with 6 six adopted children, it was both enlightening and heartening to hear. A recent study supported by the NIHR Peninsula Collaboration in Leadership for Applied Health Research and Care (PenCLAHRC, part of the NIHR family of health and research initiatives) in collaboration with the European Center for the Environment and Human Health (ECEHH), has found that most study trials focusing upon outdoor activity showed an positive improvement in mental well-being — and when compared with exercising indoors — exercising outdoors was associated with stronger feelings of revitalisation, increased energy and positive engagement, combined with decreases in tension, confusion, anger and depression. Guidelines for children’s play often measure the amount of physical activity, which involves how much active play, children should be getting. Guidelines also outline the limitations for sedentary behavior. Here are a few recommendations for physical activity in children aged 5-12 years: – Children require at least 60 minutes (and up to several hours) of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily. – Children should never spend more than two hours daily using electronic media as entertainment (i.e.computer games, television, internet), and particularly NOT during daylight hours (vitamin D… sunshine…).
